About us

Outside the box literacy philosophy

What is outside the box literacy? It is an approach to literacy education that challenges traditional models of teacher-centered instruction by engaging students in student-centered learning opportunities such as book clubs, Socratic circles, reading and writing workshop, and project-based assessments.

An outside the box literacy classroom is rarely quiet. This is not a classroom where students fall asleep at their desks, lie about having done the reading, or pass the time watching the clock. You'll recognize this classroom by the clusters of students engaged in a task or discussion, the way the teacher moves from group to group coaching rather than lecturing, and the bookshelves bursting with contemporary young adult fiction and non-fiction rather than textbooks and anthologies.  This is a classroom where students are empowered by literacy and become lifelong readers and writers. This could be your classroom.

Custom Solutions

One size does not fit all. No two schools, classrooms, or students are alike, and Outside the Box Literacy recognizes and honors this. Our strategies and services are customized to your unique needs. Unlike more traditional models of instruction, our literacy practices engage all students and are easily differentiated to foster the growth of readers and writers of all levels.
